Linda Duffy undertook a three month residency in the industrial warehouse space at 55 Leroy Street, London from December 2007 to February 2008.
The purpose of the residency was to create a site-specific artwork responding to the building, its physical location and condition, its stories, memories, imaginings, and histories.
Linda immersed herself in the space, exploring and getting to know its physicality and its present condition. She made tracings of incidental marks and stains left on surfaces and cracks in walls and floors. This led to the finding of hundreds of fragments, evidence and objects left in the space by past inhabitants.
Linda had a series of conversations with a number of visitors to the site. These explored possible explanations for the building's current condition and potential stories behind the objects.
Linda then undertook archival research to explore the possibility of gaining insight into the building's past lives through documentary evidence.
The final stage of the process was the piecing together of the research findings and giving form to them, in order to communicate a sense of the place.
The finished work, Traces and Evidence, took the form of a mapping of the history of the building along with an installation of fragments and evidence of past activities found on-site.
Traces and Evidence was included in a group exhibition, Forensic, which took place, in the warehouse, at the end of the residency period.
